    Description

Check out this rad vintage souvenir felt pennant.  “DESERT of MAINE, at FREEPORT on U.S. ROUTE 1”.  This is a pre-Interstate tourist attraction that opened in 1925.    The condition is good for a piece of this age, the screen printed lettering, graphics and colors still vibrant image still crack-free.  The pennant tails have some tattering and missing pieces, tip is also a little tattered.  It has a couple of small rust stains from tacks, typical patina for a pennant of this age.  Pennant measures approximately 17 inches long, add 4 inches for the tails.
The Desert of Maine attraction’s main feature is a 40-acre expanse of glacial sand dunes, surrounded by a coastal forest, in the town of Freeport, Maine.  The land that encompasses the Desert of Maine was purchased by the Tuttle family in 1821. Like other Maine farmers of the era who were struggling to compete in an expanding agricultural market, the Tuttles’ methods of farming gradually depleted the soil of essential nutrients. Combined with overgrazing by large numbers of sheep, the widespread erosion of the Tuttles’ topsoil exposed a deposit of glacial sand that was lying underneath. The initially exposed small patch of sand gradually spread and overtook the entire farm. The Tuttles abandoned the land in 1919 when it was purchased for 0 (.50/acre) by Henry Goldrup, who converted it to a tourist attraction in 1925.
Although not marked, most of these pennants from this era were made by the ‘Keezer’ company.  Visit my store to see the many vintage pennants I have available.  I am adding more as my time permits.  I discount bundles and shipping, ask me if interested in more than one pennant.  Smaller pennants are shipped flat, otherwise all others are carefully rolled-up protected and packed loosely inside a box.
Felt pennants represent an era of days gone by.  They are 20th century time capsules
when felt pennants were popular and affordable souvenirs sold near public attractions and sporting events.  The decline in popularity along with rising material and labor costs have rendered them a thing of the past.  They have, however, become popular with collectors.  Good examples like this one are getting harder to find.  Newer pennants, up until they fell out of vogue, don't compare in craftsmanship and materials like this pennant- in other words- they really don’t make them like this anymore.  Don’t miss your chance to add this rare and authentically vintage pennant to your collection.  It could make that perfect vintage touch to your décor, or as a unique gift for that special person.
