Description
Antique 18th -19th century, Chinese or Vietnamese, large combat polearm partisan in the form of the spear or lance.
A leaf-shaped blade made of hand-forged iron with a visible forge layered lamination structure, engraved on both sides with scrolled decorations. The long stout tang with a faceted block is fitted into its original red lacquered bamboo pole (shortened) with a large, ribbed bronze ferrule.
These types of spears of identical form were used in China and Vietnam. So, in many sources, this type of trident is described as a Vietnamese Spear and, in others, as a Chinese Spear. Sometimes, even experts cannot tell where in fact, the Spear was made, in China, or in Vietnam.
MEASUREMENTS:
The overall length, including pole: 127 cm (50 inches).
The overall length of the iron head, including tang: 47 cm (18.5 inches).
The overall length of the iron head, including faceted block: 34 cm (13.39 inches)
Width of the blade: 4.6 cm (1.81 inches).
CONDITION:
Showing the age and usage, iron head with minor light pitting, pool cut down, red lacquer slightly worn, bronze ferrule slightly injured and soldered, the hole in the pool is worn so the tang is loose and does not hold the blade tightly, which can be easily tightened by wrapping a tang with a stripe of fabric, as it was done in most Asian blades. However, in good condition considering its age.
