    Description

This is an original issue of Scientific American magazine for April 3, 1897.   This issue is noteworthy since it features a cover article titled
The Bertillon System of Identification By Measurement
.  This article takes up the entire front cover with illustrations and text covering all of one page and part of another page.    This magazine is 16 pages including the covers measuring about 16” x  11”.
Alphonse Bertillon (French, 22 April 1853 – 13 February 1914) was a French police officer and biometrics researcher who applied the anthropological technique of anthropometry to law enforcement creating an identification system based on physical measurements. Anthropometry was the first scientific system used by police to identify criminals. Before that time, criminals could only be identified by name or photograph. The method was eventually supplanted by fingerprinting.  He is also the inventor of the mug shot. Photographing of criminals began in the 1840s only a few years after the invention of photography, but it was not until 1888 that Bertillon standardized the process.
This magazine is fully complete and well intact with just some toning from age and modest handling wear.  The magazine was folded laterally across the center and has five small binder holes punched neatly in the margin along the left edge not affecting text or illustrations.  Overall condition is very good.  Email any questions.  Thanks for looking.
